Island Brac is the third biggest island in the Adriatic Sea, and his total surface is 395 km2. The highest peak on the island is Vidova Gora (778 meters). The name «Brac» was probably given by the Illyrians. The origin might be in the word «bratos» meaning «deer». The climate on the island is mostly mediterranean – summers are long and hot, and winters are short and mild.  Brac is considered one of the sunniest islands in this region. The island of Brac is separated from the mainland by The Brac canal, that is 6 – 13 kilometers wide. The island is connected with the mainland with ferry lines, going to Split. Ferries are especially busy during summer months. There is also an airport on the island – in Bol, adding to the connectivity of the island with the mainland. In settlements Supetar, Sumartin, Splitska, Selce, Postira, Povlja, Pucisce, Milna, Bol, Murvica, Mirca, Sutivan and Nerezisce there are alltogether around 13,850 inhabitants. They are mainly living of tourism, grape growing (viticulture), and growing olives. There are many ways of accomodation for the tourists that visit this island – from luxury hotels and villas, to private apartments and rooms, camps and bungalows. To those ones who want to recreate themselves there are various sport fields available, hiking and mountaineering paths, sports on water, sailing, paragliding, and many others. There are  many cultural and historical monuments as testimonials of its rich and turbulent past. Some of the monuments are the Dominican Monastery and the church on the cape Glavica – they are the most valuable monuments on the island of Brac. The parish church St Peter in Supetar, the church St Mary in Nerezisce, the Museum of the island of Brac in Mirca. Out of the sights of nature we should mention Vidova Gora (Vidova Mountain), the beautiful beach in Bol – Zlatni rat (The Golden Cape). The island of Brac is also familiar for its limestone, that was used for building many famous buildings around the world – the most famous being The White House in Washington, and the Diocletian Palace in Split. This island offers something for everyone – regardless wheather you like adventure, or you prefer familiy vacations.
